(Excerpt from "Library Exhibits: Playful, Sleek and Bold®" in "stories from a Library life," a blog by Paloma Cruz.)

The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston and Houston and Harris County Public Libraries, among others, are collaborating on presenting an exhibition of decorative objects from the museum’s collection. The exhibition, Playful, Sleek and Bold: Modern Designs for Living, features 20 objects made by designers from the 1930s to 2001.

A description, from the MFAH site:

The exhibition features about 20 objects made by seven designers from the 1930s to 2001. Among the works are examples of Russell Wright's American Modern and Casual China dinnerware, created in 1937 and 1946, respectively. Both patterns became very popular with the public, especially American Modern, which sold over 80 million pieces from 1939 to 1959. Also shown is Michele De Lucchi's geometric silver Carafe, number 52 of the 99 hand-crafted pieces that were made. The whimsical piece stands on plastic conical feet and resembles a rocket about to take off. In 1936, the Radio Corporation of America (RCA) hired artist and illustrator John Vassos to design cases and cabinets for the first consumer television sets and other electronics. Vassos's RCA Victor Special Phonograph, a portable, stylish record player made from aluminum (1937), was one of his first creations for the company.

The current location of this exhibit:

May 9, 2005 to July 10, 2005
Houston Public Library's Freed Montrose Branch
4100 Montrose, Houston, TX 77006
832-393-1800
