Houston’s Safe Clear Program
January 04, 2005
Contributing Writer: Paloma Cruz
For motorists who drive regularly into Houston, the City of Houston’s new Safe Clear Program may come as no surprise. For the rest of us, here’s a small head up: starting January 1, three days ago, if your car breaks down on a Houston freeway, expect to be towed. And it doesn’t matter if you want to be towed or not.
I’ve seen the new signs on Highway 225, driving towards Houston: “Disabled Vehicles Will be Towed. It’s the Law.” The Houston Chronicle has already run a story about people who were surprised New Year’s night by having their cars towed, in many instances without their approval or cooperation. And that was just the day after it went into effect.
What’s the cost if you’re towed? Reportedly, you will be charged $75 for the first five miles, $1.50 per mile thereafter. A representative from AAA Texas stated that they will reimburse their members for any mandatory towing under this program. The rest of us will just have to deal with our insurance companies or checkbooks.
